Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) is a rare condition that is characterized by joint contractures (stiffness and limited range of motion) and muscle weakness, present at birth. "Arthrogryposis" refers to the abnormal formation of joints, which results in restricted movement, while "Multiplex Congenita" means that multiple joints are affected and that the condition is present from birth.

• Joint Contractures: The primary feature of AMC is joint contractures, which affect multiple joints in the body, most commonly the arms, legs, hands, and feet. These contractures limit the range of motion, making it difficult or impossible to fully straighten or move the affected joints.

• Muscle Weakness: Muscle development may be underdeveloped or weakened, which can impair the ability to perform basic movements, such as standing, walking, or grasping objects.

• Variety of Presentation: AMC can vary greatly in severity, with some individuals experiencing only mild limitations, while others face significant challenges that impact daily life. The severity and location of joint contractures differ from person to person.

• Causes: AMC is usually caused by abnormal development during fetal development. It can result from a variety of factors, including genetic mutations, environmental influences, or a lack of movement in the womb (due to conditions like muscle or nerve issues). However, in many cases, the exact cause is unknown.

• Associated Conditions: AMC can be associated with other conditions, such as respiratory problems, scoliosis (curvature of the spine), and in some cases, developmental delays. However, intellectual abilities are usually unaffected.
